The production team behind Excalibur, the Welsh fantasy feature film currently in pre-production, has announced Arwrgrefft ("the way of the hero") — a new programme of screen combat workshops designed to build a nationwide pool of trained performers for the film and beyond.

Led by Kenan Ali, Excalibur's Fight Director and highly respected tutor and stunt co-ordinator, the Arwrgrefft programme teaches participants the art of screen swordcraft — the techniques used to choreograph and perform sword fighting sequences for camera.
“It’s fun but we’re not just running a hobby class," says Executive Producer Neil Patrick. "We're building something. Excalibur is going to need a large number of performers who can handle a sword convincingly on screen, and rather than importing that talent, we want to grow it. Arwrgrefft is how we do that — one session, one town, one group of trained people at a time."
The programme launches on 19 March with a two-hour introductory workshop in Llanrwst, North Wales, with further sessions planned across the country in the coming months. No prior experience is required.
Workshops are open to aspiring actors, martial arts enthusiasts, fitness groups, historical re-enactors, and anyone with an interest in learning a practical screen skill from a working film professional. Each session costs £20.
Arwrgrefft is part of Excalibur's wider commitment to building the infrastructure for a Welsh-led fantasy film industry — not just making a film, but developing the skills, talent, and community to sustain one.
